Delhi
Can take you aback with its Vibrancy and growth, less than 60 years ago the
spacious, quite and planned city of new Delhi was still the pride of late
colonial British India. while immediately to its north the crowded lanes of
old Delhi resonated with the sounds of bustling medieval market. Today, both
worlds have been overtaken by brash rush of modernization. As Delhi's
population Surges towards 13 millions its tentacles spread in all directions
from both the ancient core of ShahJahan's city in the north and the late
British capital of New Delhi to its south.
A daytime drive from the airport gives something of the feel of this dynamism,
the roads often crowded with traffic, high-rise buildings transforming the
spacious outlines of Lutyen's New Delhi with its broad tree-lined avenues, into
a humming commercial hub centred around Connaught place close to the New Delhi
Railway station, the hub of the New Delhi's network to the rest of India, the
cheap hotels and guesthouses of Paharganj, heart of backpacker land, squeeze
between cloth merchants and wholesalers, cheek by Jowel in the narrow lanes.
In old city is still a dense network of narrow alloys and tightly packed
markets and houses. Your senses are bombarded by noise, bustle, smells and
apparent chaos.
To the south is yet another, newer, chrome and glass city, the city of
the modern suburbs and urban 'farms' where the rural areas of Gurgaon have
become the preserve of the Prosperous, with shopping malls, banks and private
housing estates.
