Haridwar

Haridwar said to be one of the oldest cities in the world, lies at the base of the
Shiwalik Hills where the river Ganga passes through its last gorge and begins a
2000 km Journey across the plains. Legend has sanctified it by placing Vishnu's
foot print on the river bank making Haridwar (Vishnu's Gate) one of the seven holy
cities of Hinduism. From sunrise, Pilgrims come to bathe at the Ghat to cleanse
themselves of their sins. You will notice holy men in their huts dispensing wisdom
to the willing, and wandering sadhus who have made nilgai and ghoral. Along the
tracks, you may spot wild boar, langur and macaque. The Himalayan yellow-throated
morten and civet are rare Peacocks, Jungle fowl and kaleej pheasant can be spotted
in the drier areas, while water birds attracted by the Ganga and the song rivers
include many kinds of Geese, ducks cormorant, teal and spoonbell, among others.
