The magnificient Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India and the last great
architectural work of shahjahan, intended to dwarf all mosques that had gone
before it with the fort, it dominates old Delhi. The mosque is much simpler in
its ornamentation than Shah Jahan's secular buildings - a Judicious blend of red
sandstone and white marble, which are interspersed in the domes minarets and
cosped arches.
The gateways symbolizing the separation of the sacred and the secular, the
threshold is the place of great importance where the worshipper steps to a higher
plane. There are three huge gateways, the largest being to the east. This was
reserved for the royal family who gathered in private gallery in its upper storey.
Today the faithful enter through the east gate on fridays an for id-ul-fir and
Id-ul-Adha. The latter commemorates Abraham's (Ibrahim's) sacrificial offering of
his son Ishmael (Ismail) Islam (unlike the Jewish and Christian tradition)
believes that Abraham offered to sacrifice Ishamael, Isac's brother.
