Shimla

Once a charming hill station and the summer capital of the British, an air of
decay hangs over many of Shimla's Raj building, strung out for about 3 km along
the ridgeline. Below them a maze of narrow streets, bazars and shabby 'locals'
houses with corrugated-iron roofs cling to the hillside. Some find it
delightfully quaint and less spoilt than other Himalayan hill stations. There
are still some lovely walks, lined with magnificent pines and cedars giving a
beautifully fresh scent to the air.

How to reach here

By Air

Shimla (Jabbarhatti) airport (23 km) from the town has daily flights from Delhi
and Kullu all year round. Indian airlines, Air Deccan flights are available and
can be badly disrupted by the weather especially during the moonsoon season.

By Rail

To reach Shimla from Delhi in a day by train, catch the Himalayan Queen or
Shatabdi Express to arrive at Kalka by 1200 hrs. From Kalka to Shimla (5 1/2 hrs),
Shwalik Express, Deluxe Shimla mail, Shimla express can be taken.

By Road

Despites the romance of the narrow gauge railway from Kalka, most people get to
Shimla by Bus or Taxi as it is so much quicker. The Bus stand and the station are
on cart road. Kalka is 3 hrs, quicker than train but requires strong stomach.
Chandigarh to Dharamshala (10 hrs), Manali departs outside the 'Tunnel' 8-10 hrs.
